Student loan debt. The dreaded words nobody wants to hear or utter. It’s the bane of every college graduate or even those who didn’t finish college for one reason or another’s existence. Guess who won’t have to deal with it tho?!
🗣The graduating class of 2019 at Morehouse College‼
Their 2019 commencement speaker, Dr. Robert F. Smith, vowed to pay off every single graduate’s student loan debt totaling roughly $40 million for 400 students. Article here.
Of course, the students cheered b/c paying back student loan debt can be burdensome and hard.
According to The Grio, Smith stated, “My family is going to create a grant to eliminate your student loans. You great Morehouse men are bound only by the limits of your own conviction and creativity,” Smith told the crowd of students, parents, and supporters in Atlanta.
One student had racked up about $100,000 in student loans by his graduation that day. He stated that he was planning to work full-time and dedicate a chunk of his salary to pay it off, but now… he doesn’t have to do that, according to USA Today.
While this is a great graduation gift and certainly nothing can top it, students are being given a clean slate to go out in the world and make something of themselves sans the constant calling of Sallie Mae/Navient.
I say to Dr. Robert F. Smith… well done! That’s very generous and selfless of you to donate such a large amount of money to young black men, who needed this burden erased from their lives.
Of course, the innawebs were talking with memes flying around about how many others, who didn’t graduate from Morehouse College that day, needed to add their names to the roster to clear their student loan debts, too. 😂😂
While it would be nice to be “in that number,” 🙋🏾♀️… I am glad that those who truly worked hard to graduate that day, truly deserve this once in a lifetime break.
Even more tho, I am glad that someone thought enough of those graduates, those young black men, to reward them for their efforts. ❤
Since we aren’t all fortunate enough to be able to help nearly as much as Dr. Smith, here are some other ways to help… pay it forward.
Be blessed and when you have a chance… pay it forward!
